Leren.nl Leren.nl is an example of a successful transfer to a paid content, which is still seen as a taboo on the Internet. Founder René Pijlman of Applinet declares:

That’s a pity, because it is limiting the development of a high-grade content. More and more people are spending more time on the web, but the quality of the material online is below level. Many short superficial stories and news messages, many product information and useless gadgets, many content that is not or hardly been taken care of."
Leren.nl, a popular site of Applinet in the serverpark of Nxs Internet, has found a solution. Recently, courses are offered online for a compensation of 1.30 €. You can find for instance courses how to write an application letter or having an interview. Also the course "Dealing with annoying people" will attract many people, because who hasn’t had a similar experience?
How does this compensation mechanism work? People are not visiting the website of Leren.nl directly in the server park of Nxs Internet, but through a proxy server of SwitchPoint, a subsidiary company of KPN Telecom. The visitor is calling an 0900-number of SwitchPoint and the compensation is paid for by means of the telephone bill. After entering a code, the telephone system of SwitchPoint sends a signal to the proxy server, that transfers the content. The visitor can then surf for four hours in the online course of the proxy server of SwitchPoint. This may seem complicated, but it’s really easy for the visitor himself.
Experiences of Leren.nl
On the questions why Applinet has put its server in the data centre of Nxs Internet and what have been the experiences over the past few years, René Pijlman says:
"We have chosen for Nxs Internet for its dedicated server package with a good price. Nxs Internet takes care of the technical administration of the server. We therefore don’t have to worry about hard disk malfunctions, replacing parts and putting back backups in the middle of the night in a remote data centre.
At the same time Applinet is free to do what it wants on this server: it can install and administer its own software. In that way technical solutions, like the connection with the SwitchPoint-compensation system, are no problem at all."
